Kitchen Renovation and Our Process

As I indicated earlier in this blog post , I truly believe that kitchen is an integral part of any house. When KD & I did renovation of our kitchen, we were without kitchen for almost four months. it was very hard, on that time, I valued kitchen so much. Believe it or not but kitchen can regulate your life.

When I got this project of kitchen renovation, one of the issues was closed of kitchen. If you believe kitchen is the heart of the house than it should be visible (and matches with your lifestyle). We knocked down two walls, added a beam to support the roof structure, change the locations of 3 functional pieces of the kitchen. These 3-functional pieces are refrigerator, kitchen sink and gas range. To have sustainable kitchen operation, the connection of all three things needs to be defined. Other things, we took care about incorporating sustainable best practices in kitchen furnishing. All light fixtures were LEDs to save energy. For cabinets, we used birch wood from Canada. Our intention was to use materials sourced from closest location from California and most importantly affordable. For paint colors, we used eco-paints from Benjamin Moore. We also restored many old appliances. Only dishwasher and refrigerator was purchased.

Client Style:

Our Client was interested in making kitchen huge. We opted out for light grey cabinets so that their 8’ ceiling doesn’t look too low for them. We painted ceiling with ultra-white color to give illusion of height. As they wanted to look their kitchen transitional, yet farm house styled, we installed farm house sink with matt black fixtures and handles. To lighten up the look further, we used subway tiles as a backsplash.

In next series, we would like to include type of stones you can use during your kitchen renovation. Our effort here is to have awareness about material choices. We are excited to start this kitchen renovation series.
